1920s Retro Finger Wave Hairstyle

There was a style in the 1920s and 1930s that was really popular among the women of that time, and it has just recently made a comeback in today’s modern era. The “finger wave” was created in an age where women started a new kind of independence that had never occurred before, and with women’s liberation came a new style of fashion trends that will forever mark the uniqueness of the 1920s. The once envied long hair was cut short in the 20s as the bob cut came into style, but because this chin length cut did not fit for every woman the new waves in hair were introduced. The finger waves are just one of the many styles of waves at that time, and it was named because a women would have to use her fingers to apply sculpting cream while waving (curling) her hair. Many women of that time found that they had to go to the salon for a more permanent finger wave, and surprisingly, from this, women started to become hairdressers for the first time in history.

Today, the finger wave has returned, and just like in the past – any women can get a finger wave. Nevertheless, the method used today is easier and faster than what it was in the past, and today all you need is to buy a three-barrel curling iron. The finger wave can still be sculpted into your hair without the use of the three-barrel curling iron, and all you need is a sculpting lotion, your fingers, and a comb. The comb and fingers work together to make the look named “finger waves,” but the process will not work for all women, so a curling iron may be needed.

To accomplish this look you first need to wash your hair normally, and then pat you hair dry so that it is still sufficiently wet – but not dripping wet. Then, evenly apply a waving lotion or product that will help you achieve this look, and make sure you do one side at a time so that the product does not dry on you. Starting at the front of your head, shape the hair by combing it and form a bump using the comb and your fingers, and then use the comb to press tightly against your fingers to keep the bump in place. Then use the comb to make a shallow dip in the hair as your fingers hold the bump in place, and then go on to create the other finger waves. If you have longer hair, and do not have a barrel iron then you can use a straightener if need be.
